Career Counseling News

Get connected not to the future you will enjoy tomorrow!  Make a wise investment in your future career today by exploring career options through Workplace Learning Connection’s student Job Shadow and Internship programs.  These experiences can help you make those important future education and career decisions.  Workplace Learning Connection staff will share their programs information at Lone Tree school on Thursday, September 1st. Online program applications will be due on Friday, September 9th.  Please see Mrs. Bryce if you have any questions or go to www.workplace-learning.org for more information.

Students have an opportunity to explore, observe and converse with a regional professional to expand their career knowledge and understanding.  The application period to apply for a second semester experience is now. The process to apply is easy.  Go to this link on our WLC website. Once they have applied, you will be prompted to approve their application via an email from info@workplacelearningconnections.com.  All parts of the applications are due Thursday, January 5th.

Big Changes in FAFSA this year:
On October 1, 2016, students will be able to complete the 2017-2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the 2017-2018 Iowa Financial Aid Application.  Instead of applying for financial aid 8 months prior to starting college, students will be able to complete the FAFSA 11 months prior.  For a more detailed explanation of the change, please see this article.
What this change means to you and your students:

  • Students who will be going to college during the 2017-18 academic year can be encouraged to complete the FAFSA beginning October 1, 2016.
  • The tax questions on the 2017-18 FAFSA will ask for data from tax year 2015.  The IRS retrieval tool makes it easy for students/families to access their tax data from the IRS and transfer the data directly to the FAFSA.
  • Students should be aware of the college/university FAFSA deadline, the state of Iowa deadline (July 1) and any other scholarship/grant deadlines to ensure their FASFA is submitted by the earliest deadline.  Some colleges/universities will be changing their FAFSA filing deadline as a result of the early FAFSA release.

As a reminder, the official FAFSA site is www.fafsa.ed.gov. Filing the FAFSA is free; students should never pay to submit the application.  Please note:  if the student and parent want to electronically sign the FASFA, they will each need their own Federal Student Aid Identification (FSA ID).  In order to generate an FSA ID each person will need a different email address; families can’t create multiple FSA ID’s with a single email address.   If a parent has multiple students, the parent only needs to create one FSA ID; that ID can serve as the parent’s signature on multiple student’s FAFSAs. FSA ID’s can be requested at any time at https://fsaid.ed.gov/

Mrs. Bryce and our wonderful ICAN representative will still be providing FAFSA support for anyone who needs it.  The Fill out FAFSA night will be held in Mrs. Bryce’s room on Monday, November 14th from 4-8pm.
