Olweus - Bullying Prevention Program
The Lone Tree Community School District cares about the safety and well-being of our students. We are committed to making our school a place that provides a comfortable setting for our students to learn. In connection with this process, the Lone Tree Community School has affiliated itself with the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.
The Olweus Program is the most-researched and most-recommended bullying prevention program available and is endorsed by the Iowa Department of Education. With over thirty-five years of research and successful implementation all over the world, OBPP is an integral component of school-wide programming that has been proven to prevent or reduce bullying throughout the school setting.
According to OBPP, the definition of bullying is:
“A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself."
In accordance with the Olweus program, Lone Tree Schools have adopted the following rules:
- We will not bully others
- We will help students who are bullied
- We will include students who are left out
- If we know somebody is being bullied, we will report it to a
trusted adult and expect an appropriate response
OBPP is used at the school, classroom, and individual levels. The program takes a proactive approach during class meetings that take place with all students on a bi-weekly basis. In class meetings, students and staff engage in productive conversations that not only focus on bullying prevention, but also include character development, team building, and service.
The program is also a tool that can be used by teachers and administrators when bullying-related incidents occur. OBPP provides guidelines that school personnel will follow when possible occurrences of bullying take place. Individualized Olweus interventions may also be utilized when incidents of bullying are founded.
It is the goal of the Lone Tree Community School District that the implementation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program will allow for a safe learning environment for staff and students, will maximize school culture, will help students build relationships, and will empower them in a positivay.e w
